Equal to my passion for painting and creativity is my love for teaching. I strive to sense the particular approach or voice that uniquely fits each student. I sense that voice in students’ concerns, in their language and in the marks they make. My approach is a positive one, encouraging fun, risk-taking, celebrating achievements and nurturing an enthusiasm for the medium we are working in.
I feel one of my strengths is an ability to reach students at any level, from novice to advanced artist.

Basics of Landscape Painting: 10-3:00 pm
Instructor: Jean Cauthen
Learn the essentials, then let your creativity fly! We start with color mixing using a limited palette. We will work from a provided photograph in the morning, covering brushwork, blocking in, and design. We discuss what to look for in a plein-air (outdoor) subject. After lunch (weather permitting) we try our hand ‘on location’ in preparation for the next day’s Newton Paint Out. With this practice, you will be ready to ‘hit the streets’ of Newton alongside other painters of all levels, as we capture a slice of this town’s personality. The class is designed for those new to landscape painting.
This beginner-friendly oil class introduces the basics of landscape painting. We will work from a photograph in the morning to introduce the basics. Painting supplies included (bring a portable easel or a small stool and TV tray type table in case we are able to paint outdoors)
